How to Choose the Right Bra for Your Shape and Size

The right bra should feel secure, comfortable and balanced on your body. Shape and size both matter, but fit can change between designers, fabrics and individual styles. Use these checks as a practical starting point, then compare them with the notes for the product you are considering.
Start with two measurements
Measure around your ribcage directly under the bust, keeping the tape level and comfortably firm. Then measure around the fullest part of the bust without compressing the tissue. Record both measurements in centimetres and compare them with our Size Guide.
Your measurements are a starting point rather than a universal answer. A soft wireless bra, a structured balconette and a push-up bra can fit differently even when the label shows the same size.
Check the band first
The band provides most of the support. It should sit level around the body and feel secure on the loosest hook when the bra is new. If the band rises at the back, it may be too loose. If it digs in sharply or restricts breathing, try the next band size and reassess the cup.
Look at the cup and centre
The cup should hold the breast without spilling, gaping or creating a ridge under clothing. Underwires, when present, should follow the natural base of the breast rather than sit on soft tissue. On many wired styles, the centre should sit close to the chest; on plunge or softer constructions, the position can vary.
Choose a shape for the result you want
A balconette can create a lifted, open neckline. Push-up styles add lift and a more defined centre. Wireless bras prioritise softness and freedom of movement. Full-cup and supportive styles offer more coverage and distribution of weight. Browse our bras and compare the structure shown in each product.
Use the straps for refinement, not rescue
Adjust straps so they stay in place without carrying all the weight. If you need to shorten them excessively to feel supported, the band or cup may need attention. Strap width and placement also affect comfort, especially for a fuller bust.
Try your usual movements
Raise your arms, sit down and move your shoulders. The band should stay level, the cups should remain in place and the straps should not slip. For a complete outfit, you can also explore panties and matching pieces after the bra fit is confirmed.
